2019 2nd Annual Fiesta Cultural

We Are Women

(Orlando, Florida, October 27, 2019)

On Sunday evening, Orange County Commissioner Emily Bonilla hosted her second annual Fiesta Cultural at University High School in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. The event consisted of singing, dancing, live music, and authentic dishes to celebrate the diverse communities of Central Florida. Commissioner Bonilla collaborated with University High School faculty and students, and neighboring businesses to bring about the free public event.

Upon her term, Commissioner Bonilla set out on a mission to highlight and share the different Hispanic cultures found within her district. She believes by allowing people of different backgrounds to understand one another we can foster a more open and inclusive community.

A volunteer at the event, President of the Mexican Student Association at the University of Central Florida, Leslye Trujillo, relished in the festivities. “I really enjoyed it and thought it was fun and interactive. I didn’t attend any local Hispanic Heritage Festivals before [in the UCF area]. I only heard of Fiesta Cultural.”

The performances that night involved Orange County employees, Carol Burkett and Yetzenia Negron, dancing the Argentinian Tango and Bachata respectively. Grupo Folklorico Mi Panama danced a typical Panamanian dance among other talented performances.

Of the showcased performances, Commissioner Bonilla recalls the Bachata dance lesson as the most memorable aspect of the night. “I just thought it was great seeing everyone interested in learning Bachata and enjoying the evening. I want to thank Salsa Heat and DJ Ace Ventura for leading the fun and getting everyone on their feet.”

Commissioner Emily Bonilla and her office would like to thank Fancy Fruit and Produce, Lechonera Latina, Lechonera Orlando, Pollo Tropical, Taka Takas Café and Zaza New Cuban Diner for donating their delicious dishes to the event. Also, a special acknowledgment of Orange County’s Fire Rescue, Parks and Recreation Department and Sheriff’s Office for assisting with the festivities.

If anyone would like to get involved with upcoming community events within the Commissioner’s district, please contact the office at 407-836-7304 or email district5@ocfl.net. The office of District 5 is eager to forge relationships with local constituents and businesses.
