Health and Housing Learning Cohort: Accomplishment #1
I applied to be a part of a Health and Housing Learning Cohort through the National Associations of Counties (NACo) and was accepted. Our team consists of my two aides, Melissa Strassner and Ivette Moreno and two Orange County staff members, Nancy Sharifi and Yolanda Martinez. We have created an Action Plan, which we are still updating as we learn more through the cohort.  Thanks to our diligent work, we have accomplished moving forward on our Goal #1, Action #1 of the Action Plan, by securing the funding and partnering with Community Legal Services to launch this initiative. The Housing for All workshop below in our “Upcoming Events” section is part of this initiative.

Request for a Work Session and Possible Ordinance for the Acquisition of Environmentally Sensitive Lands
Excerpt from Memo to Board: “My concern is that the proposed revisions to Administrative Regulation No. 11.07.01 do not provide clear direction to staff on the identification, evaluation, and acquisition of Environmentally Sensitive Lands (ESL). I urge my colleagues to require transparency and accountability when acquiring ESL. Please review the attachments and consider directing staff to conduct more research and offer us a work session as to why they propose the current revision to Administrative Regulation No.11.07.01. The work session should further address whether an ordinance would be a better practice when it comes to the acquisition of ESL.”

Boat Ramp Ordinance and Protecting my Constituents’ Businesses!
The Orange County Board of County Commissioners initiated a Boat Ramp Ordinance to solve some conflict at the Christmas Boat Ramp. I have many families in the Airboat industry that make their living on this boat ramp. To ensure a balance of public safety and protection of a free market for small businesses, I worked diligently with staff on an ordinance that will work for everyone. While not everyone is getting what they want, I feel that it is a success because staff and I made sure we heard everyone’s concerns. Also, we implemented evidence-based policymaking in the process of the creation of the ordinance.
