This summer gave us another opportunity to make sure the kids of District 5 are well-equipped for school! On July 24th, 2021, in partnership with Bithlo, Union Park, and Winter Park Neighborhood Center for Families, I, along with a small army of volunteers, held two separate Back 2 School Wellness Fair and Backpack Give-A-Way events. By handing out a total of ~750 backpacks and providing information on student health and wellness, we provided for the needs of our school-age parents in stressful times.
During this pandemic, it was common to see the quality of education in our schools tested as students transitioned to online learning. Many parents now had to contend with being a teacher at home and student learning suffered because of it. This “learning loss” is even more pronounced among disadvantaged families which is why every year I make it a priority to give out backpacks. This year, over 300 families received backpacks and school supplies to kick off the 2021-2022 school year. I am incredibly grateful for the volunteers and partners that made this event possible.
