Rent Freeze Effort
Bonilla was asking the other members of the board to approve a special public hearing to take place on June 30, in order to get a rental increase freeze on the November ballot. If the proposal makes it to the ballot, Bonilla said it would go in effect for a year. She said the freeze would only allow for landlords of rentals consisting of three units to increase rent equal to a property tax increase. “Everyone is struggling right now and I keep hearing stories of people who have lost their jobs. They are struggling to pay their rent. A lot of people right now are paying their rent with credit cards,”
COVID-19 and Community: Orange County Commissioner Emily Bonilla
It’s been a busy couple of months in my office connecting constituents with resources that are available to them during these unforeseen times. On the county level, I’m proud to say we have secured gloves and masks to donate to organizations in the front line providing food in my district. We have also expanded some testing sites in Orange County for COVID-19 and are now offering childcare services to first responders. We continue to fund many of the resources provided to the public, such as food banks, financial assistance, and health care services. I continue to work with businesses, non-profits, and other government partners to expand and bring the residents more services and resources.

Orange County Faces Proposed Sales Tax Increase in November
County Commissioner Emily Bonilla, who represents some of the eastern parts of the county, threw out a series of conditions for her support of the tax increase, including no new toll roads and no corporate welfare. “All mass transit should be free to use. Sunrail doesn’t do a great job of checking people for their tickets, and Lynx is not easily accessible due to the limited ways they accept payments…. If the taxpayers are paying for it anyway, they should ride for free,” Bonilla told her fellow commissioners. “No new revenues from this tax will go towards impacts creating the need for more capacity by any new developments. Those developments should be required to pay for their impacts, not the taxpayers.”

These are the biggest transportation concerns among Central Florida residents
Commissioner Emily Bonilla expressed several concerns at the work session Tuesday, asking also why Tourist Development Tax dollars (TDT funds) can’t help with this issue. “If we are looking for a tourist to pay 51% of this tax, why doesn’t this board support using the TDT tax for transportation?” Bonilla asked at the meeting.
