Letter to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jenkins - Regarding Feeding Students during COVID-19 Outbreak

Dear Ms. Jenkins,

I am writing to express my heartfelt appreciation for your efforts to provide for the students at home that may need meals by providing breakfast and lunch to every student. I also appreciate the consideration of making it drive-thru delivery to keep social distance and prevent the possible spread of COVID-19. However, our most needy students on a typical school day may not have transportation to school and at this time may not have transportation available to pick up the meals at the school. Please consider the following ideas:

  • I would like to suggest that we maximize the school buses to do home deliveries to those students who are on reduced or free lunches.
  • Perhaps it is possible to provide multiple days’ worth of food during one pick up to prevent having to drive multiple days. For example, Chicago has implemented a system where they package together 3 days’ worth of breakfasts and lunches to support this goal.

Again, thank you for your consideration of our children’s physical needs at this time of crisis.
