Sustanee Community Meeting: Listening To Our Community
Commissioner Emily Bonilla has been actively engaging with residents to address concerns surrounding the proposed Sustanee large-scale development in rural East Orange. With a focus on transparency and community well-being, Commissioner Bonilla has facilitated discussions and listened to the worries expressed by over 200 residents during a community meeting at Corner Lakes Middle School. The project, seeking approval for 1,800 homes on environmentally sensitive ranchlands in the Econ River Basin, has prompted concerns about road capacity, environmental impact, and potential flooding. This community update emphasizes Commissioner Bonilla’s dedication to ensuring a thorough examination of the development’s compatibility with the area’s rural character and commitment to environmental preservation.
Milestone Grant: Orange County to Aid Homeless Youth Living with HIV
For the first time, the Orange County Health Services Department has secured a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Teaming up with Zebra Youth, Inc., the nonprofit focused on LGBTQ+ youth, the 3-year grant will fund rapid rehousing services for Orange County’s homeless youth (ages 18-24) living with HIV. The program, providing case management, housing assistance, and medical coordination, reflects a crucial partnership, with Orange County overseeing grant administration and Zebra Youth, Inc. delivering essential services.
Sunshine Meeting to Discuss TDT Funding
In a recent Sunshine Meeting focused on TDT funding, Commissioners delved into critical financial considerations for key entities like Camping World, KIA Center (formerly the Amway Center), and Visit Orlando. Commissioner Bonilla proposed a strategic move to enhance oversight, suggesting the appointment of a County Commissioner to the Visit Orlando board by the BCC. Emphasizing transparency, she recommended an annual presentation by Visit Orlando to the BCC for budget approval. Commissioner Bonilla also raised concerns about Visit Orlando promoting attractions outside Orange County, potentially impacting local businesses. This meeting provided valuable insights into the ongoing efforts to align funding decisions with the best interests of Orange County and its attractions. Case Closed!
In a recent constituent case, Commissioner Emily Bonilla’s office demonstrated its commitment to community welfare by swiftly addressing and resolving an urgent matter. A concerned resident faced difficulties reaching the LIHEAP phone line for essential heating assistance and sought help. Recognizing the urgency due to a looming disconnection notice, the request was forwarded to Commissioner Bonilla’s team. A staff member in Commissioner Bonilla’s office promptly contacted LIHEAP on behalf of the constituent, emphasizing the critical nature of the situation, as the individual, a diabetic with a child with ASD, needed electricity for medical purposes. Commissioner Bonilla’s office facilitated direct communication, ensuring the constituent received the LIHEAP applications, ultimately resolving the issue and providing timely assistance to someone in need.
