Shelter Animals Need Love Too

According to the ASPCA, about 6.3M companion animals cycle into animal shelters in the US each year. That number has actually seen a decline since 2011, as it was previously 7.2M.

While many cats, dogs, and furry friends do end up quickly finding their forever home, others don’t. For example, the stigma around certain breeds like pitbulls contributes to their struggle of finding a home. But adoption rates are on the rise thanks to the efforts of animal shelters and activists.

Come along as we explore Orange County Animal Services with Diane Summers and The Pittie Party of Central Florida with Lynette Correa.

Adopt, Don’t Shop

Orange County Animal Services pulls all of their creative tricks out of the bag to promote adoptions. The more creative and engaging, the higher chance of bringing people in to take an animal home.

Diane reveals a few promotional methods they’ve used, “So, we’ve done ones where there’s like a big “Price is Right” style wheel, where you can spin that to get your lowered adoption price. We’ve done Lady Whiskerdown, you know, our play on the “Bridgerton” Lady Whistledown.”

So far, these efforts have proven successful for the shelter. Their live release rate for dogs is about 96%. To increase the adoption rate for cats, the shelter runs a special BOGO deal, as cats live better in pairs.

You can adopt from Orange County Animal Services regardless if you rent or own a home. The shelter houses a wide variety of breeds, as they are open-admissions and do not turn down a dog because of breed.

If you live in the Orange County area and want to give an animal in need a new family, then adopt- don’t shop- at the Orange County Animal Services. Even fostering an animal can make a difference. And don’t forget to check their website and social media for adoption promotions.

Pet Rescue on a Mission

The Pittie Party of Central Florida is on a mission to rescue as many shelter animals as possible. “The Pittie Party is a 501[C][3] non-profit organization. And it is run entirely by volunteers who take their time to network animals within shelters [and] find homes for them,” explains Lynette.

When you become a foster, The Pittie Party provides you with all the resources needed to get started as a pet owner. “We are going to provide you with about $300 to $400 worth of supplies right off the bat,  so you have everything that you need for this animal. We’re going to be a support system for you,” says Lynette.

In addition, the rescue also assists with medical care and behavior training if needed. Their volunteers even manage your pet’s vet schedule, training sessions, behavioral consultations, and so on.

While The Pittie Party does work with all dog breeds, their focus is primarily on bully breeds- pitbulls. This is extremely important for Orange County, as there is overpopulation in the area.

You can follow The Pittie Party of Central Florida on Facebook and contact them there for more information.
